Start by listening to speakers who have your own linguistic background. That way the words are different but not too different. Your brain will process the familiar sounds more easily, letting you focus.
When you start working on the accent, don’t worry too much in the beginning about rolling that rrrrrrr or nailing the pronunciation of Eyjafjallajokull. If you’re older than a teenager, your ear can’t pick up all the subtleties anyway.
After you feel comfortable with the gringo accent and can hear the difference between pronunciations, start incorporating the correct sounds. Then panic about the weird alphabet and all the vocabulary. Bonne chance!
Many people often like to stay in their comfort zone, when it comes to speaking a new language. Maybe we somehow fear of being laughed at, with our funny accent. But if you really try hard, only fools will not appreciate the extra effort and will often return the favor and assist you however they can. Keep in mind that those laughing at you probably speak one language less than you, and are therefore, well... dumber...
Words and expressions often relate to local realities, habits and cultures. If you try to link words with they mean "in real life", you'll not only be able to remember them more easily, you'll be able to use them in and out of their context, and even better, you'll better be able to figure out those other words you don't understand, around the words that you do. All languages are open windows onto vast chunks of culture and they are amazing opportunities to learn new ways of life, and new ideas.
Start watching television shows or movies in the language you want to learn, with subtitles. That way you'll gradually tune your ears to how natives speak in ordinary situations. Eventually you'll begin to recognize sentence patterns and individual words.
