When caught and brought to the surface of the dark sea before dawn, firefly squid emit a brilliant blue glow. Tourist cruises offering a close-up view of the fantastic lights will begin Saturday. Firefly squid fishing involves two boats, each carrying one edge of a net set in waters off Namerikawa in eastern Toyama Prefecture. 外国人と英語で政治の話をしている時、 "Don't you konw President of the U.S.?" と、聞かれて何て答えますか？ 当然、現アメリカ大統領はオバマで、世界で一番有名な大統領と言っても過言ではありません。
知っているので、"Yes." と、答えていませんか？ 間違いです。 質問文で "Don't you know (知らないの？)" と、否定疑問で聞かれているので、
答えは "No. (いいえ、知っています)" とすべきです。 より丁寧に "Yes, I don't know." とか "No, I know." と、するれば誤解を生まずに済むのですが・・・。 また、日本人は話の相づちの代わりに "Yes" を使うので、向こうから "Yes/No" Question で聞かれた時に、向こうもYesなのかNoなのか混乱してしまいます。
相づちは、各文毎ではなく、意味の塊単位で使い、内容に応じて、 "Yes" "Yeah" "Uh-huh" "Sure" "I see" などを上手く使い分けましょう。
